How to transfer credits

Follow these steps to get credit for courses you’ve already taken.

  1. When applying, please indicate that you plan to use transfer credits at Northeastern.
  2. Once you’re accepted, submit all of your transfer credit documents, including official transcripts.
  3. Our transfer admissions team will review your documents and report how many credits qualify for transfer. This process typically takes up to three weeks for domestic students and up to six weeks for international students whose foreign transcripts need external evaluation.
  4. You’ll receive a detailed credit assessment via email, including an award letter outlining all of your credits.
  5. Your academic advisor will then create a degree audit, which shows how your credits apply to your degree program and the remaining credits needed to finish your degree.

Transfer credit sources

Maximize your credits

Northeastern accepts transfer credit from a range of institutions and career experiences to help you earn your bachelor’s degree faster. Please note that these credits do not count toward your GPA, but can be used to replace required classes within your program.

Previous Northeastern coursework

If you’ve taken courses with another college at Northeastern, you can apply those earned credits to your degree at the College of Professional Studies (CPS).

Accredited institutions

Your credits from a regionally accredited institution, such as a community college, can be transferred to CPS.

College-level proficiency exams

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) awards college credit for what you already know. Certain exam scores can be converted into transfer credit.

Military experience

Your military experience can translate to up to 75% of the credits required for your bachelor’s degree.

Prior Learning Assessments (PLA)

Your work history, professional certifications, and other life experiences may translate into academic credit. Request a PLA when you apply.

Opportunity pathways

Previous work experience with our community and employer partners can translate into academic credit.
